A Conservative Prescription for 2010

I’m no doctor, but one doesn’t need to be to know what ails our nation these days. As Barak Obama works on his tan in Hawaii while pretending to be serious about security lapses that, except for the grace of God, almost led to another successful Islamic terrorist attack on America, it ought to be clear to Conservatives, if not to all Republicans, what needs to be done to win the federal elections in 2010. The list for Republican congressional and senate candidates is really rather simple:

1.      Pledge to undo whatever nationalized health care bill Congress passes, and to promote common sense, market-driven remedies in its place. With the Democrats determined to force this massively unpopular scheme down the throats of the American people, hands down this ought to be the number one, “no-brainer” objective of every GOP candidate.

2.      Pledge to oppose any and all versions of Cap and Trade and/or actions by the EPA to regulate (that is, punish) carbon dioxide emissions. It should be clear to everyone (even John McCain!) by now that man-made global climate change is a hoax and a conspiracy promoted by liberals to weaken America, redistribute wealth (mostly ours) and establish a worldwide governing body that supersedes the sovereignty of individual nations (mostly the United States). For Al Gore’s information, humans exhale CO2 and plants breathe it—a rather natural cycle!—as is the periodic fluctuations of the earth’s temperature and climate, as rather simply pointed out in this brief video by the founder of the Weather Channel:  http://www.kusi.com/home/78477082.html?video=pop&t=a.

3.      Pledge NOT to spend any and all remaining Stimulus funds (which would immediately reduce our national debt), to cut taxes on business (which would immediately reduce unemployment) and to return all banks, car companies and mortgage outfits (including Freddie and Fannie) to the private sector (which would immediately restore a modicum of free-market principles to our nation).

4.      Pledge to oppose any effort to pass “comprehensive immigration reform”—which is basically an attempt to legalize 12 million illegal aliens (just in time for the 2010 elections)—and to get tough on illegal immigration. No more appealing to the American people than it was in 2008, this ought to be another no-brainer (even for John McCain!). With unemployment at all-time highs, even the phrase “jobs Americans won’t do” has lost its meaning. This would also immediately “create” millions of jobs for legal Americans.

5.      Pledge to declare war on Islamic terrorism and to provide whatever resources our military needs to WIN it, including sending all the troops General McChrystal requested to Afghanistan without a deadline for pulling out, keeping Gitmo open and trying all terrorist combatants in military courts—or better yet, simply treating them as POW’s, feeding them ham sandwiches and taking away their prayer rugs, TVs, computer access and all other “creature comforts.”

6.      Pledge to outlaw earmarks and to pass a balanced budget Amendment.

7.      Pledge to pass a law stating that Congress shall make no law that does not apply to its own members nor vote itself any benefit that is not shared by the American people.

I’m sure there are other issues that could easily be added to the list, but these seem to me to be the most glaringly obvious “no-brainers” for Republican candidates to run on in ‘010. Of course, one should never underestimate the ability of the GOP to shoot itself in the foot and/or to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by encouraging its members to moderate their views and not be too hard on our first black president, which, of course, worked out so well for John McCain.

In case the Republican Party still doesn’t get it, the real “big tent” in this country is made of freedom-loving Americans of every race, creed and color, who are seeing their rights and lifestyles diminish almost daily, while the rights of foreigners and non-citizens increase and as the power and authority of the federal government grows exponentially. In short, I believe that, except for left-wing extremists, the vast majority of Americans—conservatives, independents, moderates and even some Democrats—are longing for a return to the principles of the Constitution and limited government, supposed hallmarks of the GOP. As Jefferson said, “When government fears the people, there is liberty. When people fear the government, there is tyranny.” Under Barack Obama and the Democrats—sadly, with a boost from the Bush administration—the federal government in America is fast becoming an out-of-control tyranny, which threatens to dominate every area of our lives. The 2010 elections represent an historic opportunity for the Republican Party to change this.

If they are wise enough to read the tealeaves, GOP candidates might just win back both the House and the Senate this November. If not, they will have no one to blame but themselves. It’s time for Republicans to get serious about reigning in the size and scope of government. The list above might be a good starting point.
